Today at 4:30, the USA soccer team is playing against Panama in the first round of the Gold Cup. Unless you follow international soccer, you may not know what the Gold Cup is.  So let me tell you a little about it.

The Gold Cup is a soccer tournament hosted by the United States every two years, involving 12 teams from North America, Central America and Caribbean nations. The tournament takes place over 3 weeks at stadiums all over the United States. Today, team USA is playing at Nissan Stadium in Nashville Tennessee.

There are 3 groups of 4 teams and the US is in the B group. The top 2 teams in each group go on to the next round. But if you lose, you don’t automatically get eliminated, because the top 2 third place teams advance also. Those teams are in a bad position though.

At the end, the winner gets a big gold trophy and also gets to play the winner of the next Gold Cup (in 2019) for the right to play in the 2021 Confederations cup. That’s a lot of cups!

If the US wins, maybe they will have the confidence to keep winning and make it to the World Cup! Mexico won the Gold Cup last time, but I’ll be rooting hard for my team today. If you hear someone screaming U-S-A, it’s probably me.
