Participation Trophies: A Must or a Bust…

I think participation trophies are good and bad. I asked around to see what adults and kids my age think about them. I heard two things. Here’s the situation.

Participation trophies can make young kids like ages 4, 5 and 6 get excited about a sport. It may make them want to try again next season or maybe keep them interested in a sport even if they arent good at it. I have a bunch of participation trophies and medals in my room. They don’t mean a lot to me now but when I was 5 and 6 it meant that I gave it a try and that’s what my parents asked me to do.

But now I’m 8 1/2. I have lost some seasons really badly and was also on some big winning teams. The medal I got for a travel baseball league championship is my most important thing in my room. We earned it. It felt really good when my coach handed it to me. When my travel basketball team lost their season we didn’t get anything and thats ok because we didn’t earn it. I think its important for kids to know the difference.

So for young kids 5 and 6 I think its ok but after that I think they are bad. You cant just get a reward for showing up.

Thank you to everyone who gave their opinions on our instagram post on this topic!
