Athlete of the Week: Clara Finkelstein

Updated: February 28, 2017

GET READY BLEACHER BOY FANS! This week’s Athlete of the Week goes to…

CLARA FINKELSTEIN!! Clara is 10 years old and is a 4th grader at Ainsworth Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. Clara is a competitive figure skater in the northwest and is skating her way to a bright future! She trains 4 times a week on the ice at the Winterhawks Ice Arena in Beaverton, Oregon and also at Mt. View Ice Arena in Vancouver, Washington. Want to hear how committed she is? Two of her practices are BEFORE school at 6:15 am!! WOW!

Clara finished last season with an impressive 3rd place finish at the NW Regionals in the “non-test” division. She has since moved up to pre-preliminary and will be competing her single axel this year. Once she perfects her double salchows (pronounced sow-cows) and double toe loops, she will move up to the next level. By the way these 3 types of jumps are all called “edge jumps” because the skater just uses knee bend to launch themselves into the air. Other types of skating jumps are called toe jumps because the skater uses the toe-pick on the skate to launch themselves into the air. Who knew?!

Clara is a true powerhouse and uses boxing as her off-ice training method of choice. With her coach, Dody Teachman, Clara is on her way to her next competition in May at the May Blades in Tacoma, Washington. We cant wait to hear how she “slices” up the competition!

Clara’s favorite athletes and role models are 2016 World silver medalist, Ashley Wagner and 2-time US National champ, Gracie Gold.

Way to go Clara! The Bleacher Boys agree you definitely deserve to be Athlete of the Week! Congratulations and welcome to the huddle.
